<< Click to Display Table of Contents >> Grammar check via LanguageTool |
This feature is only included in SoftMaker Office NX Universal. It is not available in the Android or iOS version.
In addition to the spell check and hyphenation functions, TextMaker also has a grammar check for many common languages (see also "LanguageTool options" below).
The grammar check works according to the same principle as the option Check spelling as you type. However, it does not search for spelling errors, but for grammatical errors. If an error is found, the grammar check marks it with a green underline.
Note: The processing is performed on a SoftMaker server rather than locally on your computer. You must thus be connected to the Internet to use this feature.
Enabling the grammar check via LanguageTool
Note: For text in the language "German (Germany, Austria, Switzerland etc.)", you can either use the LanguageTool or the Duden grammar check for the grammar check. However, both do not work at the same time; only one of the modules can be enabled at a time in the settings.
To enable the grammar check via the LanguageTool, choose the ribbon command File | Options
to open the dialog box, switch to the Language tab and enable the option Use LanguageTool for grammar check.
Alternatively, you will find the option under Review | group Spelling | Grammar check
. The option Settings in the icon's dropdown menu will take you again to the above dialog box with further settings.
From now on, the grammar check permanently checks the entire document in the background for grammatical errors. It not only detects existing errors, but also immediately checks text changes and new entries for errors – with the following restriction:
Note: When editing and adding text, note that the grammar check in TextMaker always works in paragraphs. Thus, when you edit the content of a paragraph, its grammar is only checked when you leave the paragraph – for example, when you move the cursor out with the direction keys, click outside the paragraph or start a new paragraph with the Enter key↵.
Note: It should also be noted that checking the grammar of a text is a very complex task, even for the most modern computers. Thus, the grammar check may occasionally consider formulations to be wrong when they are actually correct. In such cases, simply use the command Ignore rule here (see below).
Setting the language
How to correctly set the desired language for spell check, grammar check and hyphenation is described at the beginning of this chapter in the section Setting the language.
Correcting grammatical errors
Sentences with a grammatical error are marked on the screen with a green underline. This allows you to see all grammatical errors at a glance so that you can either correct them immediately or at a later time.
To correct a grammatical error, just manually edit the part of the sentence that is underlined.
Tip: If you hover over a grammatical error (without clicking), the program will display an info box with an explanation of the error.
By right-clicking on a grammatical error, you can also open a context menu that contains the following functions:
Item |
Function |
List of |
For some types of grammar errors, a suggestion for the correct spelling is offered at the top of the menu. If you click on it, the incorrect text will be replaced accordingly. |
Info |
This option displays explanations of the grammatical error. |
Ignore rule here |
This option ignores the applied grammatical rule at this one point and removes the green underline. This command is especially useful when the grammar check has incorrectly underlined text in green that is actually correct. |
Always ignore rule |
This option always ignores the applied grammar rule from now on in all documents. Use this command if you want the grammar check to generally ignore a particular grammatical rule. TextMaker remembers this change permanently. (However, you can re-enable disabled rules at any time in the dialog box Options of the LanguageTool. See "LanguageTool options" below) |
Tip: Jumping to the previous/next grammatical error
When the grammar check has been enabled, the three buttons in the lower right corner of the document window can also be used to jump to the previous/next grammatical error.
![]()
Click on the button with the red dot. A small menu appears. Select the option Spelling error from it.
You can now use the buttons as follows:
▪Click on the up arrow to jump to the previous grammatical error.
▪Click on the down arrow to jump to the next grammatical error.
For more information on these three buttons, see Go to....
Note: If you have also enabled Check spelling as you type, the arrows will jump to the previous/next spelling error or grammatical error.
LanguageTool options
If you click on the LanguageTool options button on the Language tab in the dialog box of the ribbon command File | Options
, another dialog box opens with the following entries:
▪In the upper list, you will find an overview of the languages available for the grammar check.
▪The list below shows the rules of the grammar check with their active status. If you have used the "Always ignore rule" function in the document text via the context menu (see above), the corresponding rule is disabled. If you want to undo this, you can enable the rule again here in the dialog box by setting the check mark.
Note: Due to the large number of grammar rules available, this list only includes the rules that have been used so far.
▪If the option Show tooltip is enabled, the grammar check displays an info box with information about the type of grammatical error when you hover with the mouse over one of the green underlined grammatical errors in the text.
Disabling grammar check for a word or a section of text
You can also disable the grammar check for a specific section of text, for example, a certain word. This can be useful for comments, for example.
Select the section of text and use the Change language button
(ribbon tab Review | group Spelling) to set the setting No language.
