Replying to and resolving comments

You can also respond to a comment with a reply comment to discuss. This reply appears indented below the original comment.

Depending on whether you have enabled or disabled the comments pane (see Displaying and printing comments), you can add a reply to existing comments using the methods described below.

Replying in the comments pane

If the comments pane is enabled, the comments are displayed in comment windows at the page margin.

To reply to a comment in the comments pane, proceed as follows:

1.Click in the desired comment window and press the Reply button.
2.A new line with your initials will appear indented below the original comment.
3.Enter your reply there.

To exit the comment window, click in the normal text or press the Esc key.

Replying in the text area

If the comments pane is disabled, a pop-up window about the comment will be displayed directly in the text when you hover over a section of text that has a comment.

To reply to a comment directly in the text, proceed as follows:

1.Right-click on the desired section of text that has a comment.
2.Select Reply to comment from the context menu.
3.The comment window opens with the original comment and a new line with your initials appears indented below.
4.Enter your reply there.

To exit the comment window, click in the normal text or press the Esc key.

Resolving comments

If you want to designate a comment or an entire discussion as closed, click on the Resolve button in the comment window (alternatively via the context menu: command Resolve discussion). This closes the comment window for further entries, but it is still displayed in the comments pane.

If you still want to reopen a closed discussion, click on the Reopen button in the comment window (alternatively via the context menu: Reopen discussion).

Deleting replies / Deleting comment completely

You can delete individual replies from a discussion by placing the cursor in the corresponding reply in the comment window. Then choose the ribbon command Review | group Comments | Delete (alternatively via the context menu: Delete comment).

If you want to delete the entire discussion, place the cursor in the top entry with the original comment and then choose the command Delete. The original comment with the corresponding replies will be removed completely.
